Pumpkins are popular this time of year. Whether part of a decoration, pie, or popular coffee ingredient, pumpkins show everyone that it’s officially fall. But what happens when it’s time to say goodbye as the decor melts away on the porch?
Green up Halloween by recycling pumpkins into compost at a free, outdoor Pumpkin Smash from 10 a.m. to Noon on Nov. 7 at Sauk Valley Community College.
This year's Smash will take place in the field on the east side of the building. Park in the Dillon Mall parking lot and walk along the sidewalk to the entry of the event. Smash stations and activities will be provided by Illinois Extension, Whiteside Area Career Center, 4-H, Ag in the Classroom, FFA, and Sauk Valley Community College. Smashed pumpkins will be tilled into the field to be composted and create nutrients for next year's crop.
No cost or registration is required to attend. For questions, contact event coordinator Bruce Black at brucejb@illinois.edu or 815-632-3611.
