Take a Coffee-Fueled Road Trip Across NW Illinois

For those who find joy in the ritual of a well-crafted coffee, this road trip through Northwest Illinois offers a rich blend of local flavor, small-town charm, and scenic adventure. From sunrise brews in Byron to sunset strolls along the Mississippi River, this three-day (or longer—take your time!) itinerary highlights some of the region’s best spots to sip, stay, and explore.

If you don’t see your favorite stop for coffee or tea, scroll to the bottom for all that information.

Day One: Eastern Ogle County — A Warm Start and a Cold Brew

Start your caffeine quest in Byron at Sweetbean Café & Bakery, where the comforting aroma of espresso mingles with fresh-baked goodness. Whether you like your coffee hot, cold, or blended, Sweetbean is a strong start to the day.

Before heading out, enjoy a midday break at Hairy Cow Brewing Company, located along the banks of the Rock River. Modern industrial vibes and riverfront views make it a perfect lunch spot or a relaxed craft beer flight. Don’t miss the legendary wood-fired pizzas.

Oregon | Lowden State Park

Continue south into Oregon along Illinois Route 2. You’ll spot the majestic Eternal Indian statue (often called the Black Hawk Statue) perched across the river at Lowden State Park, where hiking trails and campgrounds await. If hunger strikes again, detour to Hazel’s Café for a flavorful sandwich and an afternoon coffee, served by the cup or bag.

Wind down the day at Ogle County Brewery, known for its laid-back atmosphere and rotating taps that capture the region’s creative spirit. As dusk approaches, hit the road to Dixon to settle in for the night.

Day Two: Lee County to Whiteside — Bookstores, Brews, and a Good Night’s Rest

Follow Route 2 south to Dixon along one of the prettiest stretches of the Rock River, featuring limestone outcroppings and wooded views. Once in town, choose from several lodging options—TRU by Hilton is the newest, offering ultra-comfy beds that might tempt you to linger longer than planned.

The local coffee scene makes that decision even tougher. Coffee Crush serves an extensive menu of coffee drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and pastries. Nearby, Books on First is a beloved independent bookstore that doubles as a café, offering sweet treats and lively conversation. Just a short walk away, Baker Street is another must-visit for artisan pastries, creative sandwiches, and fresh-roasted coffee—perfect for sipping as you take in the downtown view.

Day Three: Whiteside to Carroll — Water, Wilderness, and One Last Sip

Begin the day in Sterling at Sophie’s Café, where freshly made meals and a wide range of coffee options will fuel your morning. Continue west to Rock Falls for a paddling adventure with Rent.Fun Kayak Rentals. No gear? No problem. Cross the road to the Hennepin Canal Route 40 boat launch (off Route 40 and E. 2nd Street), and paddle at your own pace. It’s a tranquil experience suitable for all skill levels—just don’t forget sunscreen and water.

Refresh with an iced latte at Flip Side Coffee & Espresso Bar when you’re back on dry land. Its cozy vibe and friendly service make it a welcome pit stop.

Still energized? Drive north to Fulton, where Steam Anchor Coffee Co. serves up bold brews with flair. A little further along, Krumpets Bakery offers scratch-made pastries and a bustling morning crowd.

As the afternoon unfolds, head into Savanna and stretch your legs with a hike or scenic stop at Mississippi Palisades State Park. The sweeping views of the river valley are the perfect nature break. Before leaving town, stop by The Novel Bloom for one last memorable cup—this charming shop doubles as a florist and bookstore.

And because no great trip ends without dessert, swing by Shivers for classic ice cream treats–anything from cones to sundaes. If the day is winding down, head north on Highway 84 to Mount Carroll. The drive hugs the Mississippi, and the views are postcard-worthy.

Dinner in Mount Carroll offers options to suit your mood: grab a hand-tossed pie at Market Street Pizza, or enjoy a more refined meal at Molly’s Kitchen & Bar, where locally sourced ingredients shine. Cap off the evening with a craft cocktail, and if you’re not ready to leave, stay overnight in one of the two beautifully appointed suites at The Inn at Molly’s, located just upstairs.
