Northwest Illinois’ Veterans Day: A Tribute to Heroes
Northwest Illinois, encompassing Lee, Ogle, Whiteside, and Carroll counties, boasts a rich military heritage that spans from the Revolutionary War to modern conflicts. This Veterans Day, we explore how these communities honor their local heroes through memorials, events, and programs like the Lee County Honor Flight, which has sent nearly 500 veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C.
Black Hawk War Legacy
The Black Hawk War of 1832 left a significant mark on Northwest Illinois, particularly in Lee County. Dixon’s Ferry, now the city of Dixon, served as a crucial rendezvous point for United States troops during this pivotal conflict[3]. Notable figures like Abraham Lincoln were stationed in the area, with Lincoln being commissioned into the Illinois militia during this war. The war’s impact is still remembered today, with Fort Dixon, Lincoln’s camp during the conflict, commemorated at the Lee County Courthouse[3].
Samuel Whiteside, a prominent figure in Illinois military history, commanded the Illinois militia during the Black Hawk War. His bravery and leadership were exemplified in various conflicts, including his heroic actions during the War of 1812[2].
Carroll County Civil War Memorials
The Carroll County Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Mount Carroll stands as a testament to the county’s significant Civil War contributions. Dedicated in 1891, this impressive memorial features sculptures by renowned artist Lorado Taft and commemorates 1,284 Carroll County men who served in the conflict. The monument lists twelve major battles in which these local soldiers fought, including Gettysburg and Shiloh, providing a poignant reminder of their sacrifices[3]. Its inscriptions honoring those who saved the Union serve as a powerful tribute to the county’s role in this pivotal period of American history.
Revolutionary War Connection
Northwest Illinois’ military history extends back to the nation’s founding. In Whiteside County, Alexander Thompson, the only Revolutionary War veteran buried in the county, was recently honored by the Sons of the American Revolution. Thompson’s service included multiple tours of duty between 1776 and 1777, fighting in New Jersey and Pennsylvania[7].
Lee County Honor Flight Program
Established in 2010, the Lee County Honor Flight chapter has provided 493 veterans with memorable trips to Washington, D.C., including 83 World War II veterans, 83 Korean War veterans, and 327 Vietnam War veterans[4]. The program prioritizes veterans from these conflicts, with a special emphasis on World War II veterans due to their advanced age. Veterans are accompanied by volunteer guardians throughout the day-long journey, ensuring their comfort and safety as they visit various memorials in the nation’s capital[4].
The program is expanding to serve veterans from neighboring counties, including Ogle, Bureau, Putnam, and La Salle, where no Honor Flight chapters currently exist. Veterans interested in participating can contact Jim Travi or Tom Bushman of the Lee County chapter at 815-535-8047 or 815-440-3054[4].
Community Commemoration Efforts
Veterans Day observances in Northwest Illinois showcase the region’s deep respect for its military heritage. The Dixon Veterans Memorial Park, situated on the Historic Lincoln Highway, features impressive military artifacts including an F-105D Thunderchief and AH1 Cobra helicopter, alongside over 1,000 legacy stones honoring local heroes[1]. In Oregon, IL, the Ogle County Fallen Soldiers Memorial, dedicated on Veterans Day 2015, pays tribute to residents lost in various conflicts with granite cenotaphs and a traditional kneeling soldier sculpture by Jeff Adams[6]. These memorials serve as focal points for community gatherings, educational programs, and solemn ceremonies, ensuring that the sacrifices of veterans from all eras are remembered and honored throughout the year.
