'The Way We Worked' Traveling Exhibit

Saturday, February 25, 2012 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
This event does not repeat
The Savanna Historical Society proudly presents The Way We Worked - a traveling exhibition made possible by the Illinois Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institution, is coming to the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center. The exhibition will be on view from February 25, 2012 to April 7th 2012. Admission to the exhibition will be free and open to the public. The SHS will also host an opening reception of the exhibition on February 25th with a guest speaker.
The Way We Worked, adapted from an original exhibition developed by the National Archives, explores how work became a central element in American culture by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments. The exhibition draws from the Archives’ rich photographic collections covering more than 150 years to tell this compelling story, revealing how our work has shaped our modern society and built communities. It helps answer the question "Why do we work and what do our jobs fulfill?"
The Way We Worked is part of the Museum on Main Street (MoMS) program, a partnership between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and state humanities councils nationwide. MoMS serves small-to-medium sized communities by bringing Smithsonian-quality exhibitions to local museums, historical societies, libraries, and community centers around the country.
Savanna is one of only 6 communities in Illinois to have the privilege of hosting the exhibition. Made available through a grant award, the exhibition offers Smithsonian-quality exhibitions to small to medium sized museums throughout the country.
The exhibition will offer insight into our local community’s own work culture with programming and other interpretive opportunities. Combined with the collection of the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery, the tools, uniforms, and stories of our working history will be revealed both here at home and across the country. The Savanna Museum & Cultural Center is located at 406 Main St., Savanna

CCAQ presents, 'Garden Visitors' Sculptures by Leland Sedig

Saturday, May 12, 2012 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
This event does not repeat
The Crystal Cork Art Quarterly presents, "Garden Visitors", sculptures by Leland Sedig, running May 12, 2012 – August 5, 2012; Opening Reception, Saturday, May 12, 6 – 8 p.m.; The Crystal Cork Wine Shoppe, 219 West First Street, Dixon, IL.  Leland Sedig takes the tools of a welding shop to creative levels. His desire is to make items as appealing as possible using nature as the primary source of inspiration. His work is enjoyed indoors, outdoors in the lawn, garden or a unique location. As he states, "Making metal sculptures provides me with projects that I can see and touch after completed which wasn't an aspect of my employment history in sales and management. I have recently been introduced to the idea of themes and find it interesting, pondering the complexities of making families of items. For me, it's a new avenue I'll enjoy pursuing."
"Garden Visitors" features an array of insect forms and natural wonders of varying complexity such as, dragonflies, bees, ants, and butterflies installed on the walls and from the ceiling of The Crystal Cork Wine Shoppe. Leland employs tools traditionally used in the welding and machining industry. After pondering, visualizing, deciding on an item, and determining the finish and metal to used, he begins the building process. For the sheet metal components, he uses an actual size paper silhouette snapshot of the item. Then he cuts component part templates from the snapshot and at this point changes them by incorporating his own interpretation and details, similarly as a tailor uses templates for making make a suit. This template is then regenerated to a wooden hard board and used as a guide to cut the component parts using a plasma cutter. After cut, he uses a slip roll, brake and various other hand tools to make curves and bend angles. For heavier non sheet metal components other equipment such as an arbor press, lathe, milling machine and other hand tools are used to form, bore holes and needed other operations to achieve the desired form. When all the component parts are complete, it's at this point that he can acutely see the finished item as visualized and at that point further changes may occur. Welding the parts together is then done using the MIG process. Applying the finish or patina is incorporated at different stages of the building process. Mild steel is appealing to Leland for the natural rust patina that forms when left outdoors for several months. He has also applied color to it by using heat, stain (gun blue) and paint. Stainless Steel has the alloy chrome added so it doesn't rust although is more difficult to fabricate. It can be polished to a mirror finish or sanded to different textures which is the process normally used. Brass is another alloy he has occasionally used to make complete items, or as an overlay for unique texture and color. After needed details are finished, and he has reached a high level of satisfaction, the sculpture is complete.

Mississippi River Valley Art Drive

Saturday, November 02, 2013 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Every Day until November 03, 2013

The Mississippi River Valley Art Drive (MRVAD) is a self-guided art tour on November 2 and November 3, 2013, that allows the public to visit local artists in the setting that inspires their creativity. Not all of the stops are individual studios, but all of the art is done by local artists.

This is the 7th MRVAD art drive offering the opportunity to interact with the artists in a more private, personal setting; their studio, their home or private gallery. Most comfortable in the environment of their creativity, this encounter allows for depth of conversation and the development of a relationship between artist and art enthusiast. Discussion or display of techniques and materials are more easily experienced at the location of execution. It is from this location, many times, that the subject of the artwork originates. As far north as Bellevue, Iowa, with artists sprinkled throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding river towns, through Bishop Hill, to the West Central Illinois Arts Center of Macomb, a variety of artists incorporating 30 different mediums participate in this art tour.

The fall MRVAD art tour includes The Next Picture Show in Dixon, Illinois as well as the Starlight Art Glass Studio in West Burlington, Iowa. There are scenic routes to encompass any or all sectors of this far reaching Mississippi River Valley art tour. Most artists are available by appointment if time does not allow you to reach them during the drive.

Some artists invite others to join at one location making it convenient for the public to experience several artists in one spot. The list of the participating artists with corresponding addresses and hours of operation are available at www.mrvad.com by printing the map and brochure. This site will also provide any last minute cancellations or unavoidable changes. Take some time to review all of the artists and then plan a route! Telephone numbers are listed so all inquiries may be specifically directed.

This is a fun experience. Enjoy the changing countryside with fellow art lovers, conversing with the talented creators of incredibly delightful art and meeting new people while supporting the local artists of the Mississippi River Valley.

NPS event 11.1216 event Marbles by Carol Creel NWS

"Marbles" by Carol Creel

Artist Carol Creel (“MARBLES”) from Louisiana collects handmade marbles which she combines with her grandmother’s cut glass to create paintings. “The bold colors of the marbles follow the sleek lines of the cut glass giving the illusion of liquid color. This liquid color creates visual appeal. Glass is very challenging. However, with careful observation to detail transparency can be achieved.”

Watercolors of all Styles

The Next Picture Show Gallery in Dixon has been selected as one of only 7 galleries around the United States to showcase the National Watercolor Society Traveling Show. The show runs from Nov. 12-Jan. 3.
