Orphan Train

Carol Chandler, a retired registered nurse and an active community volunteer from Dixon, Illinois will share her knowledge about the Orphan Trains at the Lanark City Hall on April 16 at 7 PM. This free program will be sponsored by Lanark’s Sesquicentennial Book Committee and the public is invited.

Chandler’s research covers northwestern Illinois and adjoining counties in Wisconsin and Iowa. Over 250,000 homeless and orphaned children from crowded eastern U.S. cities were transported on trains all over the country between 1854 and 1929. “Descendants of these young people live among us and helped to make the Midwest what it is today,” according to Chandler.

Experience side-splitting comedy magic with helpers from the audience (they might be your neighbors). Be transported by classically-trained voices performing your favorite songs from Broadway and the movies.

Your heart will soar, your sides will ache, and you’ll scratch your head in amazement.

It's time to gear up for another enjoyable and informative event at Savanna Museum and Cultural Center.  On August 10th, at 2 p.m., Ferrell Anderson will give a program titled, "Decoding the Native American Past: From the Last Ice Age to the Black Hawk War".

Mr. Anderson is the founder and current president of the Quad Cities Archaeological Society and is President of the Illinois Association for Advancement of Archaeology.
He will relate through a slide program, the entry of man into the new world, their cultural evolution in prehistoric central  North America, and their tribal life as described by early European and American witnesses.  He will also describe how this remarkable story came to an end in our area in the Black Hawk War of 1832, and how it still has repercussions todayl
Mr. Anderson welcomes folks, who are in attendance on August 10th, to  bring any treasured ancient artifacts, for identification, and/or just for sharing.

Steve Stiles, local Thomson archeological enthusiast, will have his museum quality collection of artifacts on display also on that day.

All are welcome for this Museum event on Aug. 10th at 2:00, and the admission is free.  Donations are gratefully accepted, to the Savanna Museum and Cultural Center."

Teams will be given a set of coordinates for a specific location which they will find using a handheld GPS unit.  Once at that location, teams must work together to complete a task. Registration is required for the race! A team is comprised of a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 6. Teams will be driving and walking to get to their designations.
